WireMasters: Enhancing your IFE Solutions

The In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) market is on the rise as technology continues to advance. The number of commercial aircrafts equipped for broadband communication links is expected to quadruple world-wide over the next decade. Approximately 3,300 current commercial aircrafts have broadband capabilities and by 2023 the number is set to increase to at least 13,000 aircrafts. In order to meet demands, we must adapt to the developments and provide solutions to increase the transfer rates throughout the aircrafts. Reaching altitudes of more than 30,000 feet, bandwidth availability is limited causing delays in the functioning of the IFE systems. The key solution in this process is providing specialized wire and cable that support the data transfer rates. Efficiency is not the only concern, choosing lighter weight products is of ever increasing importance for most companies and engineers. For example, the new Boeing 787 holds up to 70 miles of wire and cable; that is 25 miles less than the 767.  Boeing was able to achieve this reduction by utilizing lighter weight products that provided improved results.

Boeing isn’t the only company adapting and expanding due to this industry trend, Rockwell Collins has announced their opening a new segment known as Information Management Services. Representing 12 percent of the company, the new division is predicted to demonstrate drastic growth by fiscal year 2015.

“This is all around taking advantage of a trend that is undeniable, which is a connected airplane and being able to move information on and off the airplane,” Kelly Ortberg, Rockwell Collins CEO and President said. “We see some really nice growth coming out of that.”

Rockwell Collins says they are aware of older model aircrafts updating needs, but also want to put a main focus on new models such as the 787 and A350. With advanced systems already onboard the newer models, it provides optimized opportunities to companies like Rockwell Collins allowing them to offer advanced information services such as; flight planning, scheduling and management.

It’s hard for passengers to grasp how much wire and cable runs from the IFE server to their seat, as this material is effectively hidden within seat cushions and trays. When 300+ passengers are trying to retrieve data from one server issues can occur. The overall goal is to improve the connectivity to the IFE server to help enhance the passenger’s experience. Statistics state, around 6 percent of airline passengers opts to utilize onboard communication systems, but that rises to a near 25 percent or higher on U.S. transcontinental runs. Although the demands are rising and carriers are quickly upgrading and implementing the latest expensive hardware and software, the industry is facing a dilemma due to the lack of profits brought in by the new systems. Due to these risks, it’s important to provide systems at lower costs, but increased speeds.
